    The U.S. Coast Guard has set a goal of a net zero carbon footprint for housing at their Southwest Harbor Base in Maine.  The base is using solar panels, solar hot water heaters and now a wind turbine for their energy needs.  Efficiency-boosting retrofits will also be done, including new electrical systems and better insulation.

    The newly-installed wind turbine sits atop a 70-foot tower and provides power to a duplex housing unit located on the base.  The upgrades and retrofits will begin in October.

    The Coast Guard is looking to install wind power at other bases in Maine and around the country.  This push toward renewable energy is part of a bigger program by the Department of Defense to get 25 percent of their energy from renewable sources by 2025.

    As Capt. James McPherson of the Coast Guard said, “We want to be good stewards of the environment and we want to be careful how we spend tax payer dollars, but we also think the debate is over whether we need to go to alternative energy.”  Yes, it is.

One of them, Green Smoke, pitches its cigarette as an eco-friendly one. Electronic cigarettes do not emit smoke, instead trails of vapor come out of the fag end. And Green Smoke claims that their cigarette, by being a product that has no ash, secondhand smoke and no chances of setting anything on fire, can easily be termed as a green product.

    Sources at the company clarify that the cigarette has no tar, toxins or carbon monoxide. An E-cigarette is a battery powered product that has a cartridge that contains nicotine, chemicals and other flavorings. The nicotine in the cartridge is converted to vapor, that is inhaled by the ‘smoker’. Although users who use this are technically, ‘vaping’ the propylene glycol/nicotine solution, not ‘smoking’. This method of ingesting nicotine, which is the addictive element in a cigarette, is supposed to be technically not damaging to the lungs and heart.

     The FDA and other health officials are, however, of the opinion that the device is not really as safe as the companies claim they are. They say that the cigarettes that were officially tested do contain carcinogens. This information has been publicly questioned by e-cigarette makers, who challenged the FDA’s take on this issue by filing a lawsuit.

    Grobe and Fritz’s mentos powered simple contraption using a bike and trailor for a car works on the famous geyser experiment in which mentos candies help expedite rapid release of carbon dioxide in the form of a geyser when dropped into a carbonated drink.  The trailor in the test powered by piston mechanism uses 108, 2 liter Coke Zero bottles and 648 mentos and helps the car travel a distance of 220 feet! Elated by their enjoyable feat the duo team of Grobe and Fritz are eyeing the moon, but we doubt the acceptance of this newfound fuel as a substitute for gasoline in terms of cost of production. Besides that cleaning the carbonated foam, raging from the rear is inviting in the least.

    Eco Factor: Solar hybrid superyacht reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

    Luxury, comfort and style are what yachts have been known for, but it looks like Suater Carbon Offset Design is here to change the perception. The company is here to add the element of green into the lives of the ultra-rich with their first eco-friendly yacht the “Transcendence”. The 49-meter superyacht is said to be the world’s first Zero Carbon yacht capable of achieving 25 knots.

    The Transcendence comes with Mercedes Benz unit to produce a very clean diesel electric power plant, which helps in achieving between 50 and 100% reduction in green house gas emissions over conventional engines. The Solar Hybrid also has a bunch of solar cells that capture sunlight to produce energy and a lithium-ion battery system that store power from the grid when plugged in at dock. Let’s hope the rich have some money to spare for this trendy ‘ultra-green’ machine.

    Eco Factor: Megayacht propelled by a solar hybrid engine.

    We frequently report about yachts that have adopted new technologies to reduce their carbon footprint. While most of them just aim to reduce emissions, this one from Sauter Zero Carbon Design promises to be the first zero carbon footprint megayacht in the world. Dubbed the Supernova, the 60m Solar Hybrid Megayacht boasts wingsails half as tall as sails found in conventional monohulls that promises to reduce drag and provide a much greater thrust.

    The yacht also includes an advanced hydro and aerodynamic design that harnesses sun, wind and the waves to generate electricity to propel the yacht to a cruising speed of 17 knots. A 100 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is achieved by employing multiple diesel electric drives that are supported by rotational wingsails.

    The large amount of power and money we lose to vampire power is startling, and it is good to see that some serious work is finally being done in the direction to prevent this huge waste of power. While things like the Fair Energy Clock could help fight off the problem, the clock happens to be mechanical, and would possibly require a lot of human intervention. That is where the ZERO charger from AT&T scores, it does not require any human intervention to cut off vampire power.

    This eco-friendly charger automatically looks for connected devices, and if none is found, it disconnects to minimize energy wastage.
