Eco Factor: Future highway system based on naturally occurring wind and air powered propulsion.

The future of urban transportation weaves around co-evolution of road and vehicle based on green energy. Industrial designer David Huang envisions future transport scenario as the “Jet Stream Super-Highway” and the “Hyper Wing Sail Vehicle.” Inspired Syd Mead‒s way of integrating vehicles with its surrounding environment, this ingenious designer has come up with a concept that features vehicles deriving energy from the road infrastructure and roads in turn draws energy from the environment.

The first part of his project is the Jet Stream Super-Highway concept. Based on an open-return wind tunnel design that produces a continuous stream of air flow from the environment, the roadway is shaped like a half-pipe in cross section. It has a series of solar-powered turbines and fans hovering above to push air into the road pathway in addition to continuously drawing air at a controlled rate by drawing vents on the flanks. The solar panels lined on the upper surface of the road are responsible for making it a completely green energy design. Sensors communicate with vehicles on the road for necessary fine tuned wind adjustments.

The second part of Huang’s design, the Hyper Wing Sail Vehicle, is a first-generation wind-powered transport vehicle designed specifically to traverse the Jet Stream system. The vertical wing sail with dual air foils offers efficiency and control, while the outrigger wings with rear wheels extend out provides stability during operation. Its body is designed to manage laminar airflow and air brakes combined with wheel brakes are used for braking. When this super green car moves on the highway, it transforms into compact mode, as the vertical wing sail and the outrigger wheels fold in and is then powered by a compact onboard battery and has independently motorized wheels.

Eco Factor: Zero-emission vehicle powered by human movement and electricity.

Tim Turrini-Rochford from the University of South Australia has created a conceptual vehicle that can end all problems associated with both motorized transport and bikes. Christened NoVelo, the vehicle is based on the body of a velomobile but features additional electric motors for high speed commutes.

The vehicle uses parallelogram linkage that allows it to tilt through corners. A small movement of the steering handle turns the front wheels that in turn changes the weight distribution and allows the vehicle to tilt on corners. This results in the NoVelo being able to corner faster and with more stability than current velomobiles.

The fairing uses a combination of a horizontal and vertical airfoil to better aerodynamics and allow the NoVelo to hit a top speed of 50kph using the built-in 300W hub motor. The fairing has been designed to be made using Kevlar and flax fiber and foam honeycomb.

Eco Factor: Electric car charger reduces battery charging time.

GE has unveiled a new smart-grid-ready electric car charger in San Francisco. Dubbed, WattStation, the charger has been designed in part by Yves Behar and is intended to become a new icon for electric car driver and hopefully encourage others to adopt a green ride as well.

The company claims that the WattStation decreases electric vehicle charging time from 12-18 hours to just four to eight hours. GE WattStation will be commercially available globally in 2011. The company will also unveil a specialized home version of the charger later this year.

Designed by Rui Gou, a vehicle design student at the Royal College of Art, the GlideX 2020 is a concept vehicle designed for Chinese roads. The zero-emission electric vehicle is powered by electromagnets integrates in roads. The concept also includes a portable auxiliary power unit and a lithium-ion battery pack.

Running on magnetic roads, the concept vehicle promises a zero-emission ride and interacts with participants to help them achieve better driving efficiency, by providing physical and virtual assistance and feedback while they are driving. Moreover, a sustainable driving mentality will start to emerge in China.

Eco Factor: Electric vehicle grand prix to rev up interest in electric vehicles.

Purdue University will hold the inaugural Electric Vehicle Grand Prix April 18 as part of a program to educate a new generation of highly skilled workers to design, build and service electric vehicles. Researchers at the university state that electric vehicles represent the future, and they’re getting students prepared for the same.

President Barack Obama last year announced that Purdue would lead the consortium, a $6.1 million effort funded through the U.S. Department of Energy with money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The consortium will develop degree and training programs for the electric-vehicle industry, which is expected to grow dramatically in the coming decades. About 60 students in several Purdue courses are involved in developing the evGrandPrix.

Fifteen go-karts will race in the first annual evGrandPrix at 1 p.m. on April 18 at Purdue’s Grand Prix track in West Lafayette. The race will last about an hour, with the vehicles taking roughly 100 laps. The vehicles are built on a platform called a kart, which is a tubular-steel frame 5 feet long and 44 inches wide. They will be capable of accelerating faster than traditional gas powered go-karts, but will be restricted to a top speed of about 35 mph for safety purposes. Scoring will be based on a combination of race performance, energy efficiency, engineering design and community outreach.

Go-kart development and construction is the centerpiece of a new Purdue course in electric vehicle technology, in which 24 students are enrolled. The students, who are organized into four teams, each of which will race their karts, are learning about various aspects of electric vehicles, including battery technology, vehicle construction and electronic controls and braking systems.
