Eco Factor: Sustainable house design with solar canopy to power a series of desalination fields

American firm Zellnerplus’ ingenious and futuristic thinking showed it the way to bagging the second spot at the Fort Tilden Field House Competition. The concept proposal for the Fort Tilden Field House located on a former military site in New York is an exploration of the unformulated edge between landscape urbanism and ecological conservation. The idea is to power a series of desalination fields using a huge solar field.

Installed on nearly 225,000 square foot canopy, the solar field will produce enough energy to be used for extracting salt through desalination process. The salt gathered by the process would be stored on the site in the form of a series of pyramidal land forms. This 8-foot tall flying carpet like structure houses a gymnasium, private viewing boxes for the stadium, a sports bar, a restaurant and a café.

In addition the Solar Field House supporting solar canopy will include meeting rooms, locker rooms, an observation deck, a sports lounge. The two 20,000 square foot legs that hold up the entire mat-structure wrap the tennis and basketball courts in them. Just above the courts reside the seating from where games can be enjoyed.

Sungevity is offering the 102-panel, 17.85 kW solar system, installation and warranty as a free donation, at no cost to the Obamas, the government or tax payers. The only costs associated with the panels would be the upkeep and maintenance. In case the president isn’t comfortable with the $107,900 donation, they’re also offering a 10-year lease of the equipment at $537/month with maintenance and monitoring included.

To sell the idea and to get us all onboard, Sungevity created a website, SolarOnTheWhiteHouse.com, where the company has laid out a full quote, detailing the financial aspects, utility savings, technical information and environmental benefits of the installation. Also at the website, you can sign a petition asking the president to accept Sungevity’s offer.

According to Sungevity, the solar array would reduce the White House electricity bill by 81 percent, or $1,610/month.

Eco Factor: Sustainable architecture designed to run on renewable solar and wind energy.

The Eco-Sushi House by eco-conscious designer Michael Jantzen explore ways in which to create new and exciting architectural art aesthetic for commercial structures. This is done through the careful integration of alternative energy gathering and storage systems into the design. This structure incorporates two large vertical axis wind turbines and a large area clad with flexible photovoltaic cells for all of the electrical power generation requirements.

A major section of the roof can be opened and or closed to help heat the structure in the winter, and naturally ventilate it during summer. There are two automated sliding insulated panels that cover two automated glazed panels that can also be opened or closed to accommodate changing climatic conditions. In the winter, the sun is allowed to enter the structure through the operable roof sections or through the south facing glass doors and windows, which are shaded in the summer by a large built-in overhanging roof section.

The entire floor of the Eco-Sushi House contains a large amount of thermal mass in order to store the solar heat in the winter, and help cool the structure in the summer. The windows on the East and on the West are designed to prevent the sun from entering the structure during the summer but still help to illuminate the interior through indirect natural light.

A large sushi bar that only serves sustainable sushi is located at the center of the lower portion of the Eco-Sushi House, and a private dining space is located on the second level (naturally illuminated by a circular skylight) along with an outside balcony. There is also a shaded outdoor dining space located below the north side of the two-story structure. The symbolic aesthetic inspiration for this design comes from a fishing vessel, equipped with two large sails.
