The new durable eco friendly shipping box was designed by a team of eBay employees at Innovation Expo – which is a program that encourages employees to come up with ideas for products tat benefit eBay buyers and sellers.

The exterior of the box has messages like ‘Reuse eBay Box’ and ‘Where to Next?’ and ‘This box is on a mission to make shipping a little greener and the world a little cleaner’.

The inside of the box also carries messages including one that encourages recipients to sell again on eBay. It says “Now that you’ve gotten what you wanted, sell what you don’t and make some extra cash.”

There is also space on the box for recipients to write a personal message to the next person in the chain – and so the history of each box can be tracked through a virtual community where buyers and sellers can connect online.

The eBay Green Team says that if each box is reused at least five times, it can save almost 4,000 trees and2.4 million gallons of water and conserve enough energy to power 49 homes for a year.

The company has launched the boxes in a pilot program – printing 100,000 boxes in three sizes. Participants in the eBay On Location event have been participating in the pilot program.

The feedback will give the company more information on how well the boxes can function and what they can do as their next step to take the idea forward.

The new collection is based on the inner world of a child and his/her search for laughter, beauty and authenticity. The range has been designed by Florence Wetterwald.

Blabla is known for being an eco friendly company and sell their products, especially the handmade dolls, across the world in 35 countries ranging from Australia to Zimbabwe. The new Fall collections named ‘Lucky’ and ‘Perchance’ have a series of whimsical animals.

There is also a collection of cards and notebooks available from Blabla which have been designed in collaboration with Rachel Ortas.

Colin Paton’s firm has already won a place on the prestigious Scottish Green List, and now that has been followed by a nomination for the Scottish Green Awards.

Colin’s green drive started in 2008, when he was motivated by the publicity surrounding environmentalism, and added six hybrid cars – Toyota Priuses – to his fleet of taxis. Although they cost him almost £5,000 additionally per car, he was convinced that the savings in fuel and road tax would enable him to recover the difference.

He anticipated making the money back in four years, but now feels that recovery could happen faster – in two and a half or three years.

His drivers are put through training, which helps them to cut down on fuel consumption. Colin also plans to make his own biofuel sources from chip oil to power some of his vehicles. The fact that he recycles old oil and tires, and has built his own garage so that mileage is saved when his cars require work to be done on them, only adds to the eco-friendliness of the company.

When he started off there were rival companies scoffing at the concept. Now, he has been able to show them that taking care of the environment does not necessarily mean that it will be bad for business.

With the hybrid vehicles, Paton saw his fuel bills dropping by approximately £300 a week, and also made a huge difference in consumption.

He believes his approach could cut emissions from the taxi business by 30 million tonnes every year. Statistically figuring it out reveals that one tonne of carbon every 12,000 miles can be saved by going the Colin Paton route. That could add up to 30 million tonnes across Scotland.

A course in an aspect of green study is anticipated to reward one with the assurance of job stability – with environmental issues and their solution being important on everyone’s agenda.

•           Northland College-Has pioneered environmental liberal arts studies in 1971.Offers a spring course in the installation of photovoltaic including solar panels.

•           University of Wisconsin, Madison-offers degree in environmental studies, transportation management and water resources management degree. Its engineering college includes a civil and environmental engineering department.

•           University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee- offers education program in water technology and sustainable code integration. It has applied science programs in wind energy and solar energy.

Eco Factor: Eco-friendly village with photovoltaic arrays and rainwater collection.

In an attempt to preserve and enhance both the culture and the environment of Hawaii, Harrison Architects have come up with preliminary design for a micro-ecovillage. Located in Maunalani Heights, this ecovillage comprises four new houses that will be off the power grid, and eliminate the use of municipal water. Rather, the houses will collect rainwater to meet with its water requirements and photovoltaic arrays on the roof will supply power. In addition, a vertical helix wind generator placed at the edge of the cliff will generate power to be used by the entire village.

It is interesting to see the houses make a family, related in materials, style and values. Projecting out over the drop-off as children testing their wings, two houses built over the edge of the steep valley are called the “Brother” and “Sister,” while the protective “Mother” and “Father” are closer to the street. Each house consists of three layers, starting with a plinth, or base, of volcanic rock in gabions. This plinth contains the rainwater collection tank for each house.

Making the walls sustainable and aesthetically appealing is the fact that they are made from either rammed earth, or a three-layer system of sliding wooden sun-screen. The slide fully-glazed doors offers great view and lets ample of light in. The semi-translucent photovoltaic panels above each house not only generate renewable energy, but also shade the house below.

On stage and backstage, all of the live production is structured to use recyclable and green materials. The set will be made of recyclable materials, like those from Ceilume. The light bulbs that the crew will use are energy efficient ones; batteries will be rechargeable, and transportation – including human cargo, goods and equipment – is through alternative or hybrid fueled, trucks and cars. Fans and forklifts that run on green fuel have been provided by Sweetwater Digital Productions and Scenic Expressions. Celebrities attending the event will be transported to the event in ‘green’ vehicles.

Also being used are refillable water bottles for the crew, cleaning products for maintenance that are non-toxic and non-aerosol. Caterers have been requested to provide free range, home grown, organic cuisine cooked on low emission cooking grills, and also use tablecloths and tableware that can be reused. The departments of hair and makeup are equipped with cruelty-free products and other organic substitutes.

The drive doesn’t end there – the office functions with dry-erase calendars, water bottles in place of the usual plastic bottle, documents are disseminated digitally whenever possible, failing which double sided recycled paper is used.

Great care is taken to minimize the use of energy – lights and equipment are turned off when not being used and materials like glass, aluminum, paper and plastic are separated for recycling. What’s more, the leftovers from the event – food and wardrobe – will be donated, hangers and plastic bags returned to the dry cleaners.

It sure looks like a thorough attempt to ensure an all green event, one that Hollywood celebrities and TV moguls will remember a long time after they stroll down the red carpet.

Eco Factor: Morgan will manufacture an electric-diesel hybrid sportscar and a fun weekend vehicle in next three years.

After unveiling the Eva GT at Pebble Beach 2010, the English carmaker Morgan is gearing up to add a new ting of green to its portfolio of sports cars. Morgan Motor Company is planning to put two new cars into production during the next three years. The first vehicle that the carmaker will add to its current range will be called the “LIFEcar 2”, while the second model will be a “fun weekend vehicle.”

The company announced that the LIFEcar 2 is an electric-diesel hybrid sportscar, which will flaunt its high range of more than 1000 miles. The other car targeted to the adventure enthusiast will be more extreme with real entertainment value. The company has already been moving towards a sustainable future and hopes to cut down on CO2 emission significantly in the coming time.

The hybrid tugboats come from the Foss Maritime Company, for whom this is the second hybrid tugboat they are adding to their Southern California fleet. In 2009, the company had introduced the Carolyn Dorothy, which at the time was the only one of its kind in the world.

The company has announced that the new hybrid tugboat, called the Campbell Foss, will be retrofitted with hybrid technology – including generators, batteries, and control systems- at Foss’ shipyard in Rainier, Oregon.

The boat will be in service in the San Pedro Bay. This has been made possible with a $1 million grant from CARB – the California Air Resources Board.

The project will be a joint partnership between Foss, the Port of Long Beach, and the Port of Los Angeles. The new boat is a conventional dolphin tug that is currently assisting oceangoing vessels in the San Pedro Bay.

Seen as a big step in maritime evolution, this move will help to curtail the increase in sea pollution. Although emissions from shipping are terribly high, Foss Maritime believes that with hybrid tugs, almost 100,000 gallons of diesel fuel per year can be saved.

As of now the force has 3,000 gas consuming Chevy Impalas patrolling the streets. There are also 76 Nissan Altima hybrids on the force, and these initial 30 Ford hybrids are the first instalment of a total of 102 Ford Fusion hybrids that will be joining the NYPD fleet.

The Mayor stated that the hybrid vehicles use less fuel and emit fewer pollutants into the air we breathe. The long term plan is to ensure that all the patrol cars are environment friendly vehicles in order to reduce the city’s carbon footprint by 30% by the year 2017.

According to EPA estimates, the Ford Fusion 41 miles per gallon – which is more than double the gas mileage of the Impala patrol car.
