Eco Factor: Environmentally-friendly MP3 player powered by solar energy.

Industrial designer Hoang Nguyen has taken inspiration from the solar eclipse to create an environmentally-friendly concept MP3 player that runs on renewable solar energy. Christened the Sony Eclipse, the concept integrates photovoltaic cells for power generation.

The device can be attached to a window glass during the day to harvest renewable energy, which is stored in onboard batteries to power the player. The concept device also includes Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to connect to your computer for wireless music transfer.

Eco Factor: Zero-emission concept car powered by electric motors.

While NASCAR races are held on special race tracks, auto designer Bhushan believes that racing in the wilds will add more fun to the event. The designer has even created a concept vehicle for such a time, when NASCAR races will be held in places such as the Great Smoky Mountains.

Christened the X-T-Rex (Extreme T-Rex), the concept vehicle features a lightweight body made from carbon fiber and is powered by a powerful next generation front mounted electric engine. The jacked-up suspensions will also make it suitable for multi-terrain rallies.

Eco Factor: Concept racing motorcycle powered by electric motors.

The Carrera Raptor RS by auto designer Adrian Carrera is a zero-emission racing motorcycle that gets powered by electric motors placed inside each wheel. Each of the visible rims in both the wheels has a static shape and holds an internal rim, which rotates along with the tire and the brake disk.

The unique rotation of the inner rim creates a visual effect for the onlookers. The bike leans to the left or right to take curves at high speeds. Moreover, the front tire can also rotate in its own axis using a gyroscope rotation system. Unlike conventional motorcycles, the front tire here doesn’t move with the movement of the handlebar, but can be controlled electronically using the controls on the handle.

The motorcycle’s user interface features a multi-touch display that can be moved across the upper chassis and is adaptive to the racer’s needs. The handlebar has an inverted wing shape that provides stability at high speed. The racer can also control the aerodynamics and stability of the motorcycle by increasing or decreasing its height according to the speed, moving the center of gravity by means of the pivots in the lower front and lower back of the central chassis.

The Samsung Flaske by industrial designer Yanlei Wu has been designed for young females who want to remain connected with several social networking sites without compromising on their green lifestyles. The next-gen smartphone comes with a built-in GPS system and Geo Tagging to allow users to set a personal message or even snapshots to their profiles.

The phone can be used in three different modes – basic, speed dial and texting. The Flaske also enables the user to exchange voice and text messages with her friends. Powered by a fuel cell, the device also makes sure that the battery level is always readable through the fuel indicator.

Eco Factor: Concept car powered by an electric engine.

The Enyoii electric concept car is the brainchild of designer Gerardo Delgado Martinez and has been conceptualized for young people who love to drive and enjoy the elements of nature along the way. The open-air car is powered by a powerful battery pack that is charged by a dynamo system. The batteries provide power to two electric motors attached with the two rear wheels.

Enyoii’s body will be made from hard plastics, while the chassis and other structural elements will be made from metal. The car has been designed to take any shape the driver wants. The car includes two pistons powered by compressed air that carry two rolls of stretched cloth. The car’s shape can be altered by changing the position of the pistons.

The steering mechanism is completely electrical and is controlled by the ignition key, which is equipped with a touchpad. The touchpad controls every movement of the car via Wi-Fi. The designer believes that the car will be able to hit a top speed of about 40kph.

Eco Factor: Sustainable lighting system powered by solar energy.

Apart from their use in juicing electronic gadgets, photovoltaic panels are ideal for systems such as streetlamps that spend most of their time under the sun. Danish designers Michel Riss and Jens Rosbjerg have used this thought to design the Sun Flower – a solar-powered streetlamp. The Sun Flower integrates high-intensity 56W LED lamps that emit white light and have an average lifetime of 50,000 hours.

The concept lamp features give solar panels that harness sunlight to generate electricity, which is then stored in a battery to power the lights after dark. The lamp also includes a built-in daylight sensor that automatically controls the on/off function.

Eco Factor: Stylish bike concept powered by thermal and electric engine.

Stylish, powerful, aesthetically appealing and huge are the words that come to my mind when I think of this muscle hunk. Dubbed the “Custombike concept,” this dazzling bike is what I would like to call a complete green package. It is powered by a hybrid engine, which is a combination of a thermal engine and the electric one hidden in the frame.

The French designer Jean Baptiste Robilliard has also included a F1 like HERS system that harvests braking power to convert it into electric energy. The Lithium-ion batteries perform the electric power saving task for this eco-friendly concept. Honestly, it is designed as a two-wheel muscle car for the road.

Eco Factor: Hydrogen fuel cell powered concept car features an impact-absorbing fabric body.

Designed by Jack Lamburn, the Lotus Esira concept is a light-weight car that is planned to fit the year 2025. Featuring a never seen before construction method, this car of the future is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell system which drives two electric motors turning the rear wheels. Materials that make up the car are d3o and metal rubber.

The d3o is a non-Newtonian material that usually behaves like a rubbery gel, but when struck immediately turns into an extremely sturdy solid. So, this material could give the passengers great protection during an accident. The metal rubber can be stretched and molded like rubber, making the bodywork react to the movement of the suspension system.

It is also capable of conducting electricity giving the freedom to adjust the shape in accordance to the onboard computer. The body of the car can change shape while moving to keep the airflow as smooth as possible. The interior give a cockpit like feeling with a lever that looks more like the ejector seat handles of a fighter aircraft and helps to open the doors. I would certainly want to try my hands on this futuristic car’s wheel.

Designed by Rui Gou, a vehicle design student at the Royal College of Art, the GlideX 2020 is a concept vehicle designed for Chinese roads. The zero-emission electric vehicle is powered by electromagnets integrates in roads. The concept also includes a portable auxiliary power unit and a lithium-ion battery pack.

Running on magnetic roads, the concept vehicle promises a zero-emission ride and interacts with participants to help them achieve better driving efficiency, by providing physical and virtual assistance and feedback while they are driving. Moreover, a sustainable driving mentality will start to emerge in China.

Designed by Federico Biffi Gentili, Andres Luer and Alessio Zampolini, the Symmetry yacht has been designed to provide complete freedom from traditional structural approaches and optimize space for maximum comfort. The Symmetry is powered by a solar panel system consisting of 40 polycrystalline silicon cells that can be walked on.

To even better the eco-credentials of the yacht, its hull has been crafted from sustainable bamboo. The surface windows provide natural lighting and offer stunning sea views to the people onboard. To optimize its navigation attitude, the Symmetry features a single dashboard with a helm station that slides into a slot hidden in the bottom part and an innovative instrumentation with capacitive buttons hidden under the body of the dashboard and touch-screens that allow fully automated navigation.
